SUMMARY:Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord is the Christian observance that celebrates the public manifestation of the Jesus’ kingship to the world when the Magi visit and adore him. In the Gospel of Luke\, an angel of the Lord reveals Jesus as “savior\,” “Messiah\,” and “Lord” to the shepherds when Jesus is born and laid in a manger (see Luke 2). But the visit of the Magi reveals another facet of Jesus’ destiny—his kingship. \nIn Matthew\, chapter two\, the Magi announce to King Herod the purpose of their visit. Arriving in Jerusalem to seek the Messiah\, they ask Herod\, King of Judea\, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” Departing Jerusalem and following the star’s movement\, they find the child Jesus and his mother\, Mary\, in Bethlehem. Joyfully\, they prostrate themselves before the King and present to the newborn King gifts of gold\, frankincense\, and myrrh. Through this prophetic event\, the kingship of Jesus is revealed\, while the gifts brought by the Magi prophecy the type of kingship Jesus would have. \nChristian tradition holds that there were three wise men\, named Caspar\, Melchior\, and Balthasar. \nCurrent tradition in the United States often sees families using chalk to mark the top of a door post of their home with the initials of the three kings and the current Epiphany year. For example\, for Epiphany 2024\, a family would mark “20 + C + M + B + 24.” This chalking of the lintel is generally accompanied by a short ritual blessing of the house. \nSource: U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

SUMMARY:Collection for the Church in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:This weekend parishes in the Diocese of Fall River and many others will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America\, which supports ministries among the poor in Mexico\, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean lack access to church programs and ministries because of a rising secular culture\, rugged rural terrain\, and a shortage of ministers. Your generosity enables our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. \nBishop da Cunha is chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America\, which oversees this annual collection and the grants it funds. In a release on the collection\, he explained\, “This annual collection exemplifies the spiritual journey of Pope Leo XIV\, who was born in Chicago but spent most of his ministry serving the poor in Peru.” \nDuring the decade that then-Bishop Robert Prevost was Bishop of Chiclayo\, his diocese received several grants from the Collection for the Church in Latin America. With this support\, the diocese improved youth ministry in impoverished parishes\, promoted care for the environment and educated thousands of parents\, teachers and catechists in the prevention of child abuse. \nBishop da Cunha pointed out\, “The Second Vatican Council\, which ended a dozen years before Robert Prevost entered the Augustinian order\, encouraged Catholics to reach out in love across all national borders\, especially those between the wealthy global north and the developing global south. Pope Leo XIV’s faith journey embodies the spirit of why the bishops of the United States created the Church in Latin America program six decades ago to make an impact in Latin America.” \nYou can learn more here. \n
