The Fall River Diocese 2016 Catholic Charities Appeal is entering its final days, and Appeal officials encourage those who have not yet made their donation to do so before its June 30th conclusion.

Funds collected through the Catholic Charities Appeal support the charitable programs, agencies and ministries sponsored by the diocese to respond to those in need of spiritual and material assistance.

Anyone can track the progress of the 2016 Appeal by visiting its website at www.frdioc-catholiccharities.org and checking the status bar, which is updated daily. Running totals for individual parishes in the diocese are provided under the Appeal Highlights menu tab.

“The work of the parishes in soliciting parishioners and businesses in the local community for the poor in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands, is the heart of the Appeal,” said Jim Campbell, who is director of Development for the diocese. “I am amazed by the energy and zeal of so many volunteers in each parish. People are aware and knowledgeable about the agencies and ministries we support.”

Bishop James Cassidy called for the first Catholic Charities Appeal in 1942 as a way for the diocese to respond with charity to the needs arising from the nation’s entry into World War II.

“Today, our Diocese is focused on helping those in need of Christ’s Mercy and the loving attention provided by the variety of ministries that are funded by this annual Appeal, Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., writes in a recent letter to parishioners. “We firmly believe that we can continue to improve the quality of life in our community by providing for those who look to us for assistance during their time of need.”

This assistance is given without regard to race, creed, nationality, gender, or economic status.

Noting that it is the Appeal’s 75th anniversary year, the bishop invites all to, “Please join with the thousands of parishioners over the years that have left an indelible message of generosity and service throughout our diocese.”

Donations to the Catholic Charities Appeal can be sent to Appeal headquarters at P.O. Box 1470, Fall River, Mass. 02722; dropped off at any parish in the diocese; or made through the Appeal website.
