{"id":17154,"date":"2022-01-05T11:28:57","date_gmt":"2022-01-05T16:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/?p=17154"},"modified":"2023-11-06T17:40:14","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T17:40:14","slug":"bishops-blog-looking-back-at-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/es\/bishops-blog\/bishops-blog-looking-back-at-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking Back at 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bishops-Blog-head2-min-1024x341.jpg\" alt=\"Bishop da Cunha Building Faith Blog Fall River Diocese\" class=\"wp-image-10449\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my first blog for 2022, I\u2019d like to take a look back at a few highlights from 2021.<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pastoral Letter<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 24, 2021, the 7th anniversary of my installation as Bishop of Fall River, I released a new Pastoral Letter, \u201cJourneying Together: With Jesus on the Path of Faith and Hope.\u201d&nbsp; This letter introduces three areas of focus for the Diocese, as well as mission steps for individuals, parishes, and the Diocese to take over the next four years.<\/span><br>\n<strong>Outlined within the letter, the priorities include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invitational Witness \u2013 Come &amp; See<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacramental Living \u2013 Follow Me<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vocational Pathways \u2013 Go Out &amp; Make Disciples<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/journeying-together\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Journeying-Together-marquee.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16296\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my Pastoral Letter, I ask each of us to consider what legacy we wish to leave for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come. If we are to leave a legacy of authentic and lived faith, we must embrace our baptism and courageously bear witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ through the way we live our lives. We can do this, but to be most effective, we must do this together, as a community of believers centered on Christ, especially his presence in the Eucharist.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I invite and encourage you, if you have not yet had the opportunity yet to do so, to read \u201cJourneying Together,\u201d available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/journeying-together\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diocese of Fall River website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ordination of Four Transitional Deacons<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Saturday, May 22, 2021, I was blessed to ordain four men to the Transitional Diaconate at St. Mary\u2019s Cathedral in Fall River. Matthew F. Laird, William O\u2019Donnell III, Gregory Quenneville, and Laurent M. Valliere, now as deacons, are able to assist the priest at Mass and be an ordinary minister of the Eucharist, proclaim the Gospel and preach, baptize, and minister at other services.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I said in my homily, it was a most joyful day because we had four good men ordained deacons. How wonderful we celebrated this Diaconate Ordination on the eve of the feast of Pentecost. Read more about this special day as well as find a link to the ordination livestream in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-new-beginnings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the May 26th blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-15781\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Transitional-Diaconate-2021-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15781\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Deacons Matthew Laird, William O\u2019Donnell, Gregory Quenneville, and Laurent Valliere<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In celebration of St. John Vianney\u2019s feast day, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-the-call-to-be-a-parish-priest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I shared in my August 21st blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an update on the deacons, as they were wrapping up their summer assignments. Each answered questions as to where each has been stationed, how they are doing, and what they are most looking forward to as they return to St. John\u2019s Seminary in Brighton and their studies. Please continue to hold Deacons Matthew F. Laird, William O\u2019Donnell III, Gregory Quenneville, and Laurent M. Valliere, in your prayers as they return to Seminary for their final semester of study in preparation for, God-willing, June ordinations.<\/span><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synod Opening Mass<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/synod-2021-2023\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Synod-page-marquee.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16967\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Parish-Amb-Day-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16701\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, October 19, 2021, I opened the diocesan phase of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synod \u2014For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014in the Fall River Diocese in the context of Mass at St. Mary\u2019s Cathedral. A synod indicates the way that the members of the Church\u2014clergy and lay\u2014travel toward communion with Christ, together. A process of listening to the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, and to each other, to fully participate in the mission of the Church.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This special votive Mass of the Holy Spirit sought the guidance and inspiration of the Spirit for a fruitful synodal experience and outcome. I will highlight a few points from my homily from Sunday\u2019s Mass below and invite you to watch it in its entirety on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BEvsUCCaooY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Fall River Diocese YouTube page<\/span><\/a>.<br>\n<br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I stated in my homily that day, I have a dream for our Diocese\u2014to see it rise from the ashes of the coronavirus pandemic as a renewed Church, as people, centered on Jesus and the Eucharist, with the synodal process as its main character. It is time for us to reset, rekindle, reconnect, restrengthen, revitalize, and renew our Church and our parishes. The synodal process is a time for us to walk together as a listening Church, a time for every Catholic across the world to take responsibility for where the Church is going. To learn more, please visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/synod-2021-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall River Diocese Synod 2021-2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webpage.<\/span><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parish Ambassador Formation<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On, November 6, 123 ambassadors from 91% of parishes in the Diocese came together for a Parish Ambassador Formation Day. The day, organized by the Secretariat for the New Evangelization in conjunction with the ad hoc Revitalization Committee, marked the beginning of conversations on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synod.va\/en.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to journey together in the synodal process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants heard two presentations from Tim Glemkowski, who is the founder and president of L\u2019Alto Catholic Institute, a not-for-profit apostolate dedicated to helping parishes form disciples. The first addressed, \u201cWhy does the Church exist?\u201d and the second, \u201cHow to enact the Mission.\u201d Several members of the Revitalization Committee also presented. The day was designed to bring Parish Ambassadors together to connect and equip for the next step\u2014Preparation for and Implementation of Consultation Sessions.<\/span><br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-17155 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Ambassador-day.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17155\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Parish Ambassadors conclude Nov. 6th Formation Day with Mass with Bishop da Cunha and the receipt of special pins given in thanksgiving for their service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FACE Dinner with Matt Maher<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, November 3, the Foundation to Advance Catholic Education (or FACE) 27th annual Fall Scholarship Dinner returned to White\u2019s of Westport for a remarkable evening to raise much-needed scholarship funds to bring our schools within the financial reach of more students.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are so grateful to all of the generous benefactors and supporters of Catholic education in our Diocese, and to be able to be together this year. It was wonderful to be able to thank so many of them in person. A video highlighting sponsors and donors along with messages of thanks from a number of our school communities is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.face-dfr.org\/2021-face-fall-dinner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available on the FACE website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-16706\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/11\/FACE-dinner-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16706\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From Left to Right: Emcee &#8211; Kait Walsh, Co-Chair &#8211; Janna Lafrance, Bishop Edgar da Cunha,<br>Guest Performer &#8211; Matt Maher &amp; Co-Chair &#8211; John Feitelberg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\nUSCCB General Assembly<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, I had the privilege of attending the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Fall General Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland. It was good that we could be gathering again as a conference and brother bishops to spend a few days together. This year, we began with a morning of prayer and reflection the day before the official start of the meeting\u2019s business, and this definitely set a prayerful tone for the rest of the week. Additionally, I very much enjoyed the opportunity for Adoration provided during the week and learning about the new Eucharistic and youth projects\u2014both are very exciting, and I\u2019m encouraged to watch them develop and to be a part of them.<\/span><br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/resources\/consultation-usccb-causes-beatification-and-canonization\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/12\/USCCB-saints-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16924\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To learn more, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/resources\/consultation-usccb-causes-beatification-and-canonization\">USCCB.org<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work of the November 2021 USCCB General Assembly was vast, so much so, that I dedicated the majority of my December 1st blog to it. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-usccb-fall-general-assembly-recap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can read my entire recap here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br><br>\nThis brief review is hardly an exhausted list of all the blessings for our Diocese in 2021, and while we continue to face adversities due to the ongoing pandemic, I am encouraged by what we were able to accomplish in the midst of it and look forward to what we can do together in 2022.
