\u201cO Antiphons\u201d of Advent<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of my favorite Advent traditions, in essence, a countdown to Christmas is the\u2014\u201dO Antiphons\u201d of Advent\u2014 which begin on December 17 and conclude on Christmas Eve. If you would like to pray along with the Church, I have enclosed the prayers below, or pray along each day on the <\/span>Diocese of Fall River Facebook page<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>

The \u201cO Antiphon\u201d Prayers<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

December 17<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 18<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who gave him the holy law on Sinai Mountain: come, stretch out your mighty hand to set us free.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 19<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

O Flower of Jesse\u2019s stem, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 20<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at your will the gate of Heaven:  Come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead your captive people into freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAn interesting curiosity regarding the \u201cO Antiphons.\u201d If we take the first letter of the invocations in Latin\u2014Sapientia, (Wisdom), Adonai, (Lord of Might), Radix (Root\/Rod of Jesse), Clavis, (Key of David) Oriens, (Dawn\/Dayspring), Rex Gentium (King of the Nations), Emmanuel, (God with Us) and reverse the order they will form the Latin phase\u2014<\/span>ERO CRAS<\/i><\/b>. A phrase that means \u201cTomorrow, I will be,\u201d or \u201cTomorrow, I will come.\u201d And indeed, on the day after we conclude the \u201cO Antiphons,\u201d we celebrate the coming of our Lord and Savior.<\/span>

Supporting the Homeless<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I want to let you know about a significant challenge grant opportunity that, if met, could go a long way in supporting one of our homeless shelters. Recently, the George and Marie Chabot Foundation\u2019s Trustees issued the Diocese a challenge that could ultimately provide $150,000 for St. Joseph\u2019s House Shelter in Hyannis\u2014but we must raise the first $30,000.<\/span>
\n <\/span>St. Joseph\u2019s House Shelter provides emergency shelter for hundreds of men and women every year, as well as a Day Program that offers respite from the streets, resources, skill-building activities, and caring support. The funds we are raising will help to strengthen St. Joseph\u2019s House services, improving the program\u2019s staffing, equipment, and furnishings, as well as supporting the program\u2019s operations and its Winter Overflow response. That response provides additional emergency shelter beds on cold evenings that are 28 degrees or below.<\/span>
