The first phase, the Diocesan phase, consisted of gathering responses locally to questions posed by the synod via synodal sessions held in parishes, ministries, and online surveys. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/synod-2021-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">comprehensive summary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of these responses was sent to the USCCB, which synthesized all Diocesan reports to provide a single national document to present at the Synod in Rome. The Synod will happen over two-month-long meetings, beginning with the gathering today and concluding with a second meeting in October of 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-of-note-in-october\/synod-post\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25533\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25533 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Synod-post-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Universal Synod for a communal Church Graphic\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Synod will consist of 363 participating members, including for the first time women. This will also be the first time laypeople will be able to vote on specific proposals alongside bishops at a Synod. Some participants will be attending as representatives of Bishops&#8217; Conferences, Pope Francis has personally appointed others, and some will be attending as \u201cfraternal delegates,\u201d \u201cspiritual assistants,\u201d or \u201cexperts and facilitators.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"OCTOBER: FOR THE SYNOD\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nqgIrvcEKe8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pope Francis\u2019 prayer request for the month of October is for the Synod, \u201cLet us pray for the Church, that she may adopt listening and dialogue as a style of life at every level, allowing herself to be guided by the Holy Spirit towards the world\u2019s peripheries.\u201d\u00a0 I invite you to include the Synod in your personal prayers this month as the first gathering begins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Below is a prayer for the Synod 2021-2023, proposed by the USCCB, a simplified version of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adsumus Sancte Spiritus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the prayer used before every session of the Second Vatican Council. The first word of the Latin original meaning, \u201cWe stand before You, Holy Spirit,\u201d this version was chosen because it is more easily prayed by any group or liturgical assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amen.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-of-note-in-october\/our-lady-rosary\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25534\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Our-Lady-Rosary-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Statue of Our Lady of Fatima with Crown and Rosary beads\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Month of the Rosary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">October 7, this Saturday, is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572) first introduced this feast in the year 1571 to commemorate the Christian forces\u2019 miraculous victory in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pope St. John Paul II wrote an Apostolic Letter, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/apost_letters\/2002\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_apl_20021016_rosarium-virginis-mariae.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Rosary of the Virgin Mary,<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2002, explaining the grace-filled power of this prayer. He includes a poignant reminder regarding the importance for families to integrate this great devotion into their daily prayer life:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs a prayer for peace, the Rosary is also, and always has been, a prayer of and for the family. At one time this prayer was particularly dear to Christian families, and it certainly brought them closer together. It is important not to lose this precious inheritance. We need to return to the practice of family prayer and prayer for families, continuing to use the Rosary.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">October, the month of the Rosary, is a wonderful time to introduce (or reintroduce) family prayer, particularly the Rosary, into your home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-of-note-in-october\/copy-of-peace-mass-procession-1-1-768x432\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25535\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Copy-of-Peace-Mass-Procession-1-1-768x432-1.png\" alt=\"Procession of People Praying for Peace carrying Fatima Statute of Mary\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Procession and Mass for Peace<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our annual Procession and Mass for Peace began in 1975 and continues to draw many people from across the Diocese to pray for peace. Initially started to pray for peace in Portugal, it continues today with a broadened emphasis to include peace and justice worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s Procession<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and Mass<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will be held on Monday, October 9, beginning at St. Anne\u2019s Shrine and concluding at St. Mary\u2019s Cathedral. Participants in the procession should meet by 5:30 p.m. in front of St. Anne\u2019s Shrine, across from Kennedy Park on South Main Street in Fall River, to march approximately one-half mile to St. Mary\u2019s Cathedral. The procession will begin at 6 p.m., and marchers will carry candles, recite the rosary, and sing Marian hymns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/bishops-blog-of-note-in-october\/bishop-22-peace-procession-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25536\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bishop-22-Peace-Procession.png\" alt=\"Collage of Images from 2022 Procession and Mass for Peace in Fall River Diocese\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are we doing to bring peace into our world, communities, and homes? St. Pope Paul VI wrote, \u201cIf you want peace, work for justice\u201d (Celebration of Day of Peace, Jan. 1, 1972.
