{"id":3585,"date":"2016-02-04T20:21:27","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T20:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/?p=3585"},"modified":"2023-10-31T15:56:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T15:56:40","slug":"bishop-da-cunhas-2016-lenten-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/es\/news\/bishop-da-cunhas-2016-lenten-message\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishop da Cunha&#8217;s 2016 Lenten Message"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fallriverdiocese.org\/app\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Lent-Return-to-Lord-Your-God-sm1.png\" alt=\"Lent Return to Lord Your God sm\" class=\"wp-image-3612\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>\u201cRepent, and believe in the gospel.&#8221; (Mk. 1:15)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cPour out a spirit of compunction, O God, on those who bow before your majesty&#8230;\u201d<br>\n(Prayer after communion &#8211; Ash Wednesday)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear Friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all remember Lent as a time of prayer, penance, fasting, abstinence, a time to give up sweets, smoking, etc. &nbsp;Although all these things are good and noble, Lent is much more than that; it is a time&nbsp;when we are called to &#8220;Repent, and believe in the gospel&#8221;. &nbsp;A time for change, but change can only come about when we are open to hear the Word of God and live by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first part of Lent, the Gospel texts for weekdays are taken from the Synoptics.&nbsp; The message running throughout is a call to a life of Gospel conversion.&nbsp; We can call this the &#8220;ETHICAL&#8221; section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gospel readings for the second half of Lent are taken from the Gospel of John, making a presentation of the mystery of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, of whom John says that all who believe in Him will have eternal life.&nbsp; Christ is presented as the healer and life-giver, as the one who gives life through his confrontation with death and gathers into one the scattered children of God. &nbsp;We can call this the &#8220;CHRISTOLOGICAL&#8221; section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do these two sections of the lectionary fit together and what can they tell us about the spirit of Lent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of the first part of Lent is to bring us to compunction<strong>, <\/strong>contrition, and remorse. \u201cCompunction&#8221; is etymologically related to the verb &#8220;to puncture&#8221; and suggests the <em>deflation of our inflated egos<\/em>, a challenge to any self-deceit about the quality of our lives as disciples of Jesus.<strong>&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2026return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God.
