Fall River Area Lenten Mission
The annual Fall River Area Lenten Mission will take place from April 8th through April 11th, with both afternoon and evening sessions. Father José Eduardo Medeiros, a member of the Missionary Community of the Most Holy Providence who spent part of his youth in Fall River, will lead the mission, preaching on its theme of “Living the Gospel as a Permanent Way of Life – A Lenten Journey of Commitment, Trust and Renewal.”
The Mission will take place each evening at 7 p.m.; locations will rotate among different churches within the Fall River Deanery as follows: Monday, April 8, St. Joseph Church, 1335 North Main St., Fall River; Tuesday, April 9, St. Louis de France Church, 56 Buffington St., Swansea; Wednesday, April 10, St. Bernard Church, 32 South Main St., Assonet; and Thursday, April 11, St. Anthony of the Desert Church, 300 North Eastern Ave., Fall River. Confession will be available each evening beginning at 6 p.m.
The afternoon Mission will be offered each day at St. Mary’s Cathedral in the context of its daily 12:05 Mass.
Father José Eduardo serves as a spiritual director, confessor and teacher in this community’s Formation House in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and also as a missionary, preaching and leading retreats in Brazil, North America and Europe.
A native of St. Michael in the Azores, Father Medeiros came with his family to the United States in 1974, completing his secondary education at BMC Durfee High School in Fall River. After a three-year stint in the U.S. Army, he began preparing for the priesthood, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in theological studies. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1991. Since then his priestly ministry has included work with Latin-American and Portuguese communities both in the U.S. and Portugal, and parish work in Canada where he has been pastor of three parishes in the Archdiocese of Winnipeg.
