Inaugural Religious Brothers Day
The first-ever Religious Brothers Day (RBD) will take place in the United States on May 1, 2017, the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. Following the publication of the Vatican document on the “Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church” (released on the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, October 4, 2015), this day was created to serve as a celebration to honor Religious Brothers in a special way including prayer services, tributes to jubilarian Brothers, and other activities.
Sister Paulina Hurtado, O.P., the Episcopal Representative for Religious in the Fall River Diocese, encourages members of the Diocese to express their appreciation and support for the service of Religious Brothers to the Church through their prayers on May 1.
A prayer card was commissioned specifically for this initial celebration and focuses on the vocation of Brothers – a gift given by God, received by the Brothers, and shared with others. In addition, Brother Sean Whitty, an Edmund Rice Christian Brother, created two prayer services which may be used by schools, parishes and other organizations in honor of Religious Brothers Day. Religious Brothers Day is jointly sponsored by the Brothers Think Tank comprised of members from the Religious Brothers Conference, the National Religious Vocations Conference, the Religious Formation Conference, and the Conference of Major Superiors of Men.
