SUMMARY:Divine Mercy Sunday
DESCRIPTION:The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments decreed on May 23\, 2000 that “throughout the world\, the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday\, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face\, with confidence in divine benevolence\, the difficulties and trials that humankind will experience in the years to come.” \nThe devotion to Jesus as “the Divine Mercy” reflects the writings of St. Faustina Kowalska\, a Polish nun who wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Even before her death in 1938\, devotion to the Divine Mercy had begun to spread. \nAccording to St. Faustina’s diary\, she was told in a vision to paint an image of Christ’s divine mercy\, and to encourage veneration of that image. She was not an artist\, however\, but with the help of her spiritual director arranged for a local artist to work with her on the painting. In that image of the Divine Mercy as well as in others that followed\, Christ is depicted standing\, with his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing. His left hand is on his chest over his heart\, and rays of red and white light flow out toward the viewer. The image has been described as “not one of Christ in judgment but as a bringer of healing\, forgiveness\, and mercy.” \nSaint John Paul II beatified Sister Faustina\, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy\, in Rome in 1993\, and canonized her on April 30\, 2000\, the Second Sunday of Easter\, as the first saint of the Jubilee Year. During his homily at the canonization\, the Pope declared that the second Sunday of Easter would from then on be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the universal Church. \nA number of parishes in the Diocese of Fall River offer devotions on Divine Mercy Sunday. Please contact your parish or one of interest for information. \nFor more information about the Divine Mercy devotion\, visit the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy website

SUMMARY:Holy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the sacred Easter Triduum\, which concludes with the celebration of Easter Vigil Mass.  On this day\, we remember the Last Supper\, during which “Jesus\, loving those who were his own in the world even to the end\, offered his Body and Blood to the Father under the appearance of bread and wine\, gave them to the apostles to eat and drink\, then enjoined the apostles and their successors in the priesthood to offer them in turn. This Mass is\, first of all\, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist\, that is\, of the Memorial of the Lord’s Passover\, by which under sacramental signs he perpetuated among us the sacrifice of the New Law. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is also the memorial of the institution of the priesthood\, by which Christ’s mission and sacrifice are perpetuated in the world” (Ceremonial of Bishops\, 297).

SUMMARY:World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life

SUMMARY:Collection for the Church in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:This weekend parishes in the Diocese of Fall River and many others will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America\, which supports ministries among the poor in Mexico\, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean lack access to church programs and ministries because of a rising secular culture\, rugged rural terrain\, and a shortage of ministers. Your generosity enables our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. \nBishop da Cunha is chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America\, which oversees this annual collection and the grants it funds. In a release on the collection\, he explained\, “This annual collection exemplifies the spiritual journey of Pope Leo XIV\, who was born in Chicago but spent most of his ministry serving the poor in Peru.” \nDuring the decade that then-Bishop Robert Prevost was Bishop of Chiclayo\, his diocese received several grants from the Collection for the Church in Latin America. With this support\, the diocese improved youth ministry in impoverished parishes\, promoted care for the environment and educated thousands of parents\, teachers and catechists in the prevention of child abuse. \nBishop da Cunha pointed out\, “The Second Vatican Council\, which ended a dozen years before Robert Prevost entered the Augustinian order\, encouraged Catholics to reach out in love across all national borders\, especially those between the wealthy global north and the developing global south. Pope Leo XIV’s faith journey embodies the spirit of why the bishops of the United States created the Church in Latin America program six decades ago to make an impact in Latin America.” \nYou can learn more here. \n
