In early December, the Diocese of Fall River announced that effective January 2026, the Television Mass on WLNE-TV, Channel 6, would be discontinued. This difficult decision was made in response to the now widespread use of digital platforms, changing media habits, and increasing costs across the board.

While broadcast TV was for many years almost the only way to access a Mass for those unable to go to a church, other options are available now. Almost half of parishes in the Diocese now livestream their Masses on their websites and in some cases use Facebook Live or parish YouTube channels. In addition, the dominant cable television providers in the region both carry Catholic TV and EWTN, two Catholic networks that each provide multiple Masses every Sunday in English and Spanish.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., explained in the announcement, noting that Television Mass has well served the Diocese over the past 60-plus years. “It is my hope that our faithful people will understand the reasoning behind these transitions,” the Bishop said. “We are grateful to all who have supported our TV Mass Apostolate— participating clergy, WLNE-TV Channel 6, technical personnel, donors, and especially the viewers.

Mass on the Portuguese Channel

A local Mass airs each Sunday at 7 p.m. on the Portuguese Channel, which is widely carried by cable television providers throughout the Fall River Diocese. The Mass is recorded on a rotating basis from one of five parishes offering Masses in Portuguese in the Diocese as well as two from the neighboring Diocese of Providence. The weekly Mass in Portuguese is sponsored by the participating parishes in conjunction with the Fall River Diocese.
