Faith, Fellowship, and the People Who Call Nantucket Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each year, I look forward to my pastoral visit to Nantucket. The island is such a unique place, with people from across the country who come during the summer months, alongside those who live there year-round and make the island their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, I had the opportunity to celebrate three Masses at St. Mary\u2019s Our Lady of the Isle Parish<\/a>: a Saturday evening Mass in English, two Sunday morning Masses in English, and a visit before the Sunday evening Mass with the Hispanic community. Throughout the weekend, I was also blessed to spend time with many parishioners, friends of the parish, and those who support the mission of the Church on the island through the Diocese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights of my visit was a reception following the Sunday 10 a.m. Mass. Held in the backyard of the rectory and organized with the help of the Knights of Columbus<\/a>, the gathering brought together members of the parish community for fellowship and conversation. It was a wonderful opportunity to listen to the faithful, share stories, and speak about what is happening in the Diocese and in the wider Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weekend also included some unexpected moments that reminded me of the joy found in simple encounters. While speaking with some parishioners, I was asked to bless a boat. (Not an uncommon request when visiting Nantucket!) When another boat owner nearby heard about the blessing, he asked if I would bless his boat as well. I was happy to do so. During the blessing, I learned that the captain of one of the boats had recently become engaged, so I was able to offer a special blessing to the couple as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These moments are a beautiful reminder of how ministry is often lived out, not only in our churches, but also in the ordinary moments and conversations where we encounter people and share in their joys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my homily, I reflected on the story of King Solomon, who when God asked what he desired, did not ask for wealth or power, but instead asked for \u201ca wise and understanding heart\u201d so that he could better serve God\u2019s people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I invited the parishioners to consider: If God asked each of us what we wanted, what would we ask for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reflected on how important it is to recognize that we do not accomplish anything alone. I shared the example of athletes such as those who competed in the World Cup who understand that even the greatest achievements are the result of teamwork, sacrifice, and the support of many people. In the same way, our faith and our communities are strengthened when we work together, support one another, and recognize the gifts that each person brings. I experienced in the community of St. Mary a manifestation of that collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Faithful Presence of Our Brothers and Sisters on the Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the great blessings of my visit was spending time with the Hispanic community of Nantucket. While the island is often known as a place of beauty and a popular summer destination, it is important to recognize the many people who live and work there year-round and help sustain the island’s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hispanic community is a vital part of both St. Mary\u2019s and the broader Nantucket community. These men and women are hardworking, faithful, and generous in their service to others and their parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many members of the Hispanic community work in essential roles that help keep the island running. Their contributions are an important part of Nantucket’s life and success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their presence is also deeply felt within the parish. During the winter months, the Spanish Mass is often the most attended Mass on the island, reflecting the strong faith and enduring commitment of this community. During the summer, when all Masses are well attended, the Hispanic community remains a vibrant and active part of parish life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was especially grateful to see the many young people from the Hispanic community who serve at Mass and participate in parish ministries. Their enthusiasm, generosity, and commitment are welcome signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I must also recognize the dedication of Father John Murray, the pastor of St. Mary\u2019s, and Father Carlos, who provides pastoral care for the Hispanic community. The people of the parish repeatedly expressed their appreciation for the presence of both priests and the ministry they provide. I am also grateful for the Jesuits from Boston College<\/a> who assist during the summer months and help support the pastoral needs of the island. (Last weekend there were four priests and a bishop on the island!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My visit to Nantucket was a beautiful reminder of what the Church is called to be. That is a community where people from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences come together through faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left Nantucket thankful for the generosity of its people, the strength of its parish community, and the many individuals, especially those who live there year-round, who quietly serve and strengthen the island every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Father Ferry’s Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We mourn the passing of Reverend James “Father Jim” Ferry, whose more than 40 years of priestly ministry reflected a deep commitment to the people he served. Ordained in 1984, Father Jim ministered in New Bedford, Taunton, and most notably at Espirito Santo Parish in Fall River, where he served as pastor for nearly two decades and led significant parish improvements while championing Catholic education. Even after retiring in 2014 due to ill health, he continued serving parish communities in Oklahoma. Remembered for his kindness, dedication, and unwavering devotion to God’s people, Father Jim leaves a lasting legacy of faithful service.
