Statement of the Diocese of Fall River Following the June 26, 2024, News Conference

The Diocese of Fall River announced last weekend that an investigation is ongoing into allegations of sexual misconduct against Father Jay Mello, who has been placed on administrative leave. While the investigation continues, the Diocese is not able to provide additional comment on the case. At the conclusion of the investigation, all information including any allegations will be presented to the Ministerial Review Board for evaluation. The Ministerial Review Board serves as an independent and consultative body made up primarily of lay professionals to advise the bishop on alleged misconduct by clergy. Upon its review and discussion of the information, the Review Board will offer recommendations to Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., for a response to the allegations.

The Diocese of Fall River encourages anyone with concerns regarding the conduct of any priest, staff, or volunteer affiliated with the Diocese to contact law enforcement and/or Carolyn Shipp, the Diocesan Director of Safe Environment and Victim Assistance at 508-985-6508, by email at cshipp@dioc-fr.org or on our website at https://www.fallriverdiocese.org/safe-environment/report-an-incident-of-abuse/

Ms. Shipp is also the point of contact for victim assistance. The Diocese of Fall River offers supportive services to survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their families throughout the legal process and continuing after a conclusion is reached. For assistance, please contact Ms. Shipp at the telephone number or email address provided in the above paragraph.
